After decades of bone headed politicians wasting my tax dollars hand over fist, You, Barack Obama, pathetically ask for my vote to do more of the same. In one week, my world, as I know it will come to a screeching end. In one week, if you have bamboozled, conned, connived, threatened, smooth talked, bought and outright lied to enough people, they will choose to make you the president elect. In all honesty though, I hope you never are given the chance to take the oath of office. I hope, the enough people will do a "What the hell was I thinking supporting this bozo" and elect That Other Guy.
You have run on a platform of "Change". The problem I have is that you have failed to convince me that the change you plan to bring to the United States of America is a good change. I have heard nothing of the so called new ideas that every political stripe are hungry for. I have heard how you plan to extract an even heavier burden from the high achievers to give to the slackers and non-achievers.
A dozen years ago, I worked for a small business. It was founded on an idea, and financed by what is termed an "Angel Investor". That angel investor, kicked in about a million dollars to fund the development of an idea. The business grew, employed about 30 people and unfortunately died shortly after the terrorist attacks on September 11 because of a sudden shift in the attitudes of those to whom we sold our product. I'm not telling you a sob story, I'm advocating for you to leave the people who are the "Angel Investors" of the world alone. Once you get finished taxing them to pay for your health care plan, your college plan, your refundable tax credits and so forth, they won't have any extra money to take a chance and be that angel investor, who provides seed money for people with big ideas and nothing but change in their pockets.
You have stated that 760,000 people have lost their jobs this year. The economy is resilient and will recover. Those people who have skills for the economy will find jobs and go back to work. Those who have fewer marketable skills will have a harder time finding employment. The lesson here is if you are out of work, cross train, learn to weld, drive a truck, program a computer, or whatever thing you can excel and be passionate about. If you are passionate about art, sociology, or foreign films you might want enroll in a technical school immediately. There is financial aid already available.
You mentioned home values falling. I guess in my view of the world, this is actually a good thing. The home market heated up so much, and prices inflated way beyond the historical tracking with normal indicators, that this would be a correction, not a deflation. You cannot ignore the laws of supply and demand. As credit became easier to get, and the government (in the form of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae) guaranteeing the loans to people who were bad credit risks the demand for homes went up, and the supply
rose to meet the demand. Now that credit has tightened up, the demand is lower and there is an over supply in the marketplace, so the prices will drop to keep things in balance. Those who have minded their P's and Q's, and have taken the necessary steps to build and protect good credit ratings have little trouble finding the necessary credit to purchase the things they want or need.
You mentioned health care costs. I agree that they are high, but I disagree with you on WHY they are high. Lets for a moment compare and contrast car insurance and health insurance. With my car insurance, I am able to work with an agent to find a plan that fits my need. My history as a driver is assessed, coverages are agreed upon and a price is set. I am very mindful to ensure that my driving record stays clean, avoiding accidents, taking defensive driving courses, keeping my speed down and taking care to obey all of the traffic laws. If I were encouraged to take a similar approach with my health insurance, I might be highly motivated to drop pregnancy coverage when my spouse and I were finished having children. I might not need mental health coverage or drug and alcohol rehabilitation benefits since we won't need them. I would also be highly motivated to do the right things, like eat right, get regular exercise, encourage a much healthier lifestyle in all of my family members. The benefits of doing all the right things with my health will have a direct benefit to my pocket book. I think the reason health care costs are so high, is that people are TOO insulated from the costs, and they fail to do something so basic to all free enterprise, they don't comparison shop.
Now, I'm sure you can drag out case after case of people who already do all of this stuff who have been creamed by some insurer or other, but, and this is going to sound callous of me, who guaranteed that life was going to be fair. It isn't your job to make it fair either.
You speak of how wages haven't expanded. That is life in the global economy. When it is cheaper to leverage an overseas labor pool AND ship the finished product back to the US than it is to build it here, that should be a hint that maybe you shouldn't be in that business. However, if you decide to continue in say a manufacturing business who competes in world markets, then you have to find your niche. Do something better than everyone else. Turn custom orders around faster. Provide a better quality product to justify the higher price, ask the marketing guys from Microsoft to give you a hand, they are masters at it. It used to be that Made In America meant a well made, quality product, but the Japanese came in during the 70's and 80's and made better cars, electronics and a host of other things that often the foreign made good is better quality. You as president cannot make US industries make a better product, nor can you make me want to buy inferior quality merchandise. For service industries, the same rules apply, give me crappy service and I'll never return. Give me great service and I'll not only come back, but I'll bring my friends with me. You talk of restoring America's greatness, but you will never accomplish it until you allow people reap the rewards for excellence or the consequences for failure.
You mention tax cuts to corporations and how you believe that That Other Guy is doing us a disservice by granting them to the tune of $4billion. Sir, I do not know where you learned your economic theory, but corporations don't pay taxes. Any tax levied is simply applied in the cost of goods section of the balance sheet, and then passed onto the consumer. The corporation isn't going to decrease their margins to satisfy some pinhead in Washington. Those that cannot pass that cost onto their customers will just have to find other ways to conserve, like getting rid of excess (or even important) personell. If you lower the tax, then the end good or service becomes less expensive to the consumer and those good 'ol laws of supply and demand kick in. Do not demonize the oil companies. I have part of my retirement invested in them (along with millions of other people in the US and world) who depend on the dividends these companies pay. You go jacking up their costs and my dividend goes down and I'll have a whole lot less money. Those 'exorbitant' profits recently made by the oil companies, keep your bloody hands off them too. I need gas for my SUV and it takes money to drill wells and prospect for oil. You say you are going to make our country energy independent, well buddy, you won't be able to do it without oil, so get used to it. Drill baby drill. You are not doing anybody any favors by jacking up business tax rates. The best thing you can do is lower taxes and get the hell out of the way as businesses decide how best to invest in themselves to bring new and better products to market.
You ask the question "Will this country be better off four years from now?" Not if you are leading the parade. You have proposed 1 trillion dollars in new spending. Your tax policies will punish those who are in a position to inject capital in emerging markets. Your 'spread the wealth' saps people of their incentive to succeed at ALL levels of the economy, from the guy who greets you at MacDonalds to the guy who nurtures a new idea or technology from a tiny flame to a roaring fire. I have several ideas I'd love to explore, but I'm not willing to pursue them because as soon as I hit your magic threshold, the risk/reward equation changes to the point where it no longer becomes an attractive proposition.
You mention a "decent education for our children". You are right. We need to give our kids a good education and I as a parent am the BEST person to decide what my child needs. I think That Other Guy had it right when he advocated for vouchers. If the current public school system isn't living up to their responsibilities, or I believe that there is a school better suited to give my children the education they need to succeed in life, it ought to be my choice to the destination for my children every morning. Competition breeds excellence. You see it in hotels, automobiles, computers, restaurants, colleges, grocery stores. Why NOT schools? I'll tell you why, unions. The teachers union is the worst thing that has EVER happened to education in this country.
You make the statement, "The choice in this election isn't between tax cuts and no tax cuts. It's about whether you believe we should only reward wealth, or whether we should also reward the work and workers who create it." The worker is already rewarded in the form of their paycheck. They trade their time labor for their wage. They take little risk and therfore get little reward. If you take away the dream of making it rich, then you have effectively stiffled innovation, and squelched the risk taker's dream before he ever makes a try. The problem with all of your talk about the "middle class" is, I don't want to be middle class forever. I want to be rich and successful. I have NO incentive to put myself on the line for the big rewards I hope to achieve. You are just going to take it all away.
So.. Keep your change. Actually put it somewhere unmentionable in this family oriented article. I'm not interested any more in what you have to say. I don't trust you. I gave you a fair shot at winning me over, but you failed, and failed miserably. You will not be getting my vote. Please go away and be the 'citizen of the world' you claim to be. Just don't do it here. We don't want the quicksilver you are selling, because in the end, your 'cure' is going to be far worse than the disease you claim to be treating.
